Why BYOK matters

Credits are a simple way to start: tap a node, the run spends a Craft Agent credit pool. That is the right default for a first workflow. It is the wrong default once model spend is a line item you already negotiate with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or OpenRouter itself.

BYOK is for that second moment. Attach your OpenRouter key. Model nodes on NodePad send work through your OpenRouter account. You see usage there. You keep the visual builder, the iPad canvas, and the cloud schedule. You do not stand up a laptop automation suite to get key-level control.

We do not claim BYOK hides prompts from model providers. Prompts still go to the models you pick — that is the point of a model node. The privacy fact we will stand on: the OpenRouter key is stored encrypted at rest. Read Privacy for the longer version.

OpenRouter on the canvas

OpenRouter is the BYOK pipe we ship. One key, many providers behind it. On NodePad you still place a model step, still connect it to research, HTTP, Slack, or Telegram. The difference is billing: OpenRouter invoices you for those model calls instead of drawing down Craft Agent credits for that path.

Models we name in product copy today: Claude, GPT, Gemini, and others (the pricing page also lists Qwen). That is not a catalog. OpenRouter’s own list moves. Craft Agent’s picker moves. If a comparison page or an ad promised a specific SKU we do not show in the live app, trust the app.

BYOK is not a web-only settings dump. The same NodePad that holds your OpenRouter-backed nodes opens on iPad and iPhone. Design with a finger, start a run from the phone, check logs in the browser. Cloud execution keeps going when the folio is shut — that is the hosted wedge, not on-device Apple Intelligence.

Credits vs BYOK (honest)

Two meters, one product. Credits are Craft Agent’s prepaid run budget. BYOK is your OpenRouter bill for model tokens. Mixing them without saying so is how landing pages get people angry. Here is the split we ship:

• Free — 50 credits on sign-up, 3 cloud workflows, tap-to-run. No card. This is the credit path. We do not advertise BYOK on Free.
• Pro Monthly — $9.99/month: 1,000 credits/month, scheduling, more workflows, and “use your own AI key” on the live pricing grid.
• Pro Quarterly — $29.99 / 3 months: same Pro path, billed quarterly. Confirm the Polar / App Store button before you treat a screenshot as SSOT.

Credit top-ups exist on the web pricing section (examples on the homepage grid). We will not freeze those dollar figures here as if they cannot change. App Store and Google Play in-app prices can differ from Polar. Unused credits roll over while the account is active; we may expire credits after long inactivity — see Terms.
